| RESEARCH INTERESTS:1. The mechanisms by which academic research in the natural sciences is transferred to new and existing technology enterprises. More specifically, I am investigating the relative and absolute incremental economic impacts of the various mechanisms, and their relationship to the amounts spent by governments in supporting curiosity-driven research.
2. The pre-conditions that are likely to lead to nascent entrepreneurial activity, particularly for technology enterprises. These include the nature of the (often academic) research efforts that are the precursors of inventions, as well as the incentives available to the researchers. For public policy reasons, we need to understand how ‘commercializability’ depends on the type of discipline, on the qualities of the researcher, and especially on the nature (curiosity-driven or targeted) of the research. 3. Longer term research questions include the extent to which successful technology companies utilize financial ‘bootstrapping’ techniques in their early stages (rather than the classical outside-investor approach), the bootstrapping methods used, and their impact on subsequent growth. |

| Biography:
Steve Farlow joined the School of Business & Economics in 2002 as the first Executive Director of the Schlegel Centre for Entrepreneurship. Prior to joining Laurier, Steve operated his own business, Superior Safety, for 12 years. Based in Waterloo, the company distributed occupational health and safety products from several branches across the country. Sales grew from $700,000 to over $25 million; he completed the sale of the company in 2002. He gained early career experience working for divisions of Rio Tinto Zinc Corporation and later, Derlan Industries. He feels strongly that the business discipline one obtains from the experience of a large company is so helpful to an entrepreneur building a new business. Steve is an active investor / advisor to a number of early stage companies in the Waterloo area. He also serves on the boards of the Greater KW Chamber of Commerce, Communitech Technology Association, the KW YMCA, and Lutherwood. |
