Words of Wisdom: He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever!
On Giving: "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran
It is well to give when asked, but it is
better to give unasked, through understanding:
And to the open-handed the search for
one who shall receive is joy greater than giving.
And is there aught your would withhold?
All you have shall some day be given:
Therefore give now, that the season of
giving may be yours and not your inheritors`.

You often say,"I would give, but only to the deserving."
The trees in your orchard say not so,
nor the flocks in your pasture.
They give that they may live,
for to with-hold is to perish.
Surely he who is worthy to receive his
days and nights, is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink from
the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream.
And what desert greater shall there be,
than that, which lies in the courage and the
confidence, nay the charity, of receiving?
And who are you that men should rend
their bosom and unveil their pride,
that you may see their worth naked and their pride unabashed?
See first that you yourself deserve to be
a giver, and an instrument of giving.

For in truth it is life that gives unto life-
while you, who deem yourself a giver are but a witness.

And you receivers- and you are all
receivers- assume no weight of gratitude,
lest you lay a yoke upon
yourself and upon he who gives.
Rather rise together with the giver on his gifts as on wings:
For to be overmindful of your debt,is
to doubt his generosity who has the
free-hearted earth for mother, and God for father

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was established in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who had worked in Biafra. Upon their return, they were determined to find a way to respond rapidly and effectively to public health emergencies, with complete independence from political, economic and religious influences.

Today, MSF is the world’s leading independent international medical relief organisation, with 5 operational centres in Europe and 14 national sections worldwide.

MSF launch our operations in areas where there is no medical infrastructure or where the existing one cannot withstand the pressure to which it is subjected. In most cases, relief programs change to rehabilitation porjects that may run for several years after the most urgent needs have been met.

For more than 35 years, MSF have been providing medical help to people caught in many kinds of catastrophes: armed conflicts, natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes, epidemics of disease, and famines. All these situations call for rapid response with specialised medical and logistical help. MSF is renowned for our quick response and efficient, effective work in the toughest emergencies. Beyond the drama of the acute crisis, MSF also intervene in times that call for a less urgent type of action, for instance, in chronic refugees situations, areas of chronic instability, and in periods following a conflict or disaster. The action MSF takes comes in multiple forms:

  • Emergency public health care, including medicine and surgery
  • Mass vaccination campaigns
  • Water and sanitation systems
  • Therapeutic and supplementary nutrition
  • Distribution of drugs and supplies
  • Training and health education
  • Organisation or rehabilitation of health structures
  • Medical assistance within existing health structures

To ensure this independence, an important part of our funding for projects comes from donations from the public, as well as from corporations and foundations. Additional funding comes from national governments and international institutions, such as the Canadian International Development Agency [CIDA], European Community and various bodies of the United Nations.

In carrying out humanitarian assistance, MSF act as witnesses and will speak out, in private or in public, about the plights of the populations in danger for whom MSF works. In doing so, MSF seek to alleviate human suffering, to protect life and health, and to restore and ensure respect for human beings and their fundamental human rights.
